6H Compositions:

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie
by Lim Jun Rong 6 Honesty

“Cross to the far post! There are no defenders marking me!” I hollered animatedly. The team’s reliable playmaker hit a low cross to me and I trapped it deftly and maneuvered it towards the goal. I did some dummy tricks, stepping past the final defender. The only obstacle standing my way to my crowning glory was the goal keeper. I knitted my eyebrows and clenched my fists, determined to bury the ball into the net. The goal was at my mercy, and I felt a deep sense of responsibility plaguing my mind. I chipped the ball cheekily towards the goal, flailing my hands wildly as I started to celebrate, anticipating my teammates to worship me like a God. Alas! The skillful goalkeeper parried it away with excellent reflexes.
I stood transfixed to the ground with my mouth agape. I felt my heart falling from the peak of fame and success. I had wasted the golden opportunity to equalize the score. I saw my coach’s countenance morphed from a face brimming with a glimmer of hope to a weather beaten face, utterly disillusioned with my mediocre performance. It was inevitable. The sound of the whistle reverberated across the vast soccer pitch, signaling the end of the ninety minutes of thrill and excitement. I trudged out of the school gate with my shoulders slumped and my head hung low, looking crestfallen. My spirit was still trapped in the game, with the image of the haughty scoff from the goalkeeper haunting my mind. I could sense the glaring eyes locked on me from my teammates. The red haze of excitement had left me, and I felt hot and exhausted, and empty of all things. I was slapped by reality again.
The majestic sun was at its zenith, baking the ground with a vengeance. The blinding sunrays caressed the atmosphere, which the ozone layer barely coped with. The oppressive heat seared my back mercilessly. A vengeful bitterness flowed through my mind, as I lugged myself forward.
The road was cursed with deadly dry spells, as the surrounding exuded funereal incense which stung my eyes. My minds conjured up images of cooling ice-creams and thirst quenching soft drinks, as the compulsion for them made me forget about the ‘bitterness’ earlier on. I decided to take a shortcut along the construction site to satisfy my urge. I ventured past the construction site. The road was deserted as I assumed that people were enjoying their time taking a refreshing bath or having a long siesta at their cozy home.
However I was wrong. I walked past the construction site, where workers slogged their guts out just to have their rice bowl filled. The trees along the road stood stoically, lending shades to passer-by like me who gladly took refuge. Although I was spared from the dry spell, I was in the throes of a cacophonous wave of discomfort. I could hear pilling and other machinery inside. A terrible headache surfaced as I grimaced in pain. I lumbered along, perceiving a hazel brown dog lying asleep in the scant shade of a tree, obstructing my way. The annoying noise was adding to my misery, while the ‘bitter pill’ of pride that I had swallowed seemed to have taken effect. I felt I was drowning in a sea of melancholy, with the whole world challenging my patience. The dog’s thunderous snoring rekindled my memories of the sound of jeering and humiliating laughter earlier on, as though provoking me deliberately. To vent my frustration, I put my soccer skills to the test as I blasted a stone towards the oblivious dog. Troubles were not found on my radar screen. The ferocious dog had its eyes snapped open instantly, scratching itself sleepily with its razor sharp claws. It craned its neck and stared lividly at me, bracing itself to pounce on me anytime. I stood in trepidation, as I did not expect my accuracy had improved when I hit the bull’s eye. The dog advanced towards me, wagging its tail threateningly, with its eyes constantly locked on me. On my rigid face there stood an expression of ungovernable terror. With a premonition of impending disaster, I made a hasty retreat as I dreaded the thought of providing relief for the devil’s appetite. The intelligent dog did not abandon its hatred as it inched towards me. It assaulted towards me like an experienced hunter with springs in its steps, each step contributing to my compounding fear. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I tore through the humid area, withstanding the extreme temperature. The dog pursued me without any ado, determined to accomplish its mission that was to make sure I suffer.
I ran for my dear life with the dog hot on the heels. Its vicious barking spurred me to pump my legs even faster, fear was fueling my adrenaline. My exhausted leg ached in protest and my lung seemed to be enlarged to absorb more oxygen. My heart pumped relentlessly, spreading oxygen rich blood to fuel my engines for my desperate retreat. I chose to venture through the park leading to my house hoping to meet some kind hearted Samaritan along the way who would offer a helping hand to fish me out from the hot soup. The moment I entered the park, my skin pores seemed to expand to absorb the cool temperature. I was redeemed from the inferno. As the adrenaline level reached its height, my endorphins induced brain created a false sense of relief. I could no longer feel the ache and pain in my legs. I raced past rows of trees, just when I thought I could actually make the miraculous escape, I nearly tripped over the roots that were surfacing on the ground. The dog caught up with me effortlessly, as I could hear its heavy panting behind me. The devil’s roaring was tempting me to give up my futile attempt. I chanted some prayers hoping that God would save me from this purgatory, vowing that I would not repeat this kind of mistakes again. However, there was no point crying over spilled milk. My two ‘accomplices’, which were exhausted after the intensive soccer training, were struggling to maintain my best physical form. Hence, I decided to hide behind a bush, hoping my green jersey could blend with the surrounding and camouflaged. Indeed, the dog lost sight of me. As I watched the dog seeking for its unfortunate victim, I was conspicuously reminded of a pureblooded, well-trained fox hound as it dashed backwards and forwards through the covert, whining in its eagerness, until it came across the lost scent.
As ill luck would have it, some twisted branches snapped free from a tree towering above me, and bombarded my head. I could not endure the excruciating pain, thus I squealed in pain, forgetting that this would draw the dog’s attention. Without warning, the dog’ nose twitched and barked with delight as it seemed to find its target. I sprinted at break neck speed, hoping to shake off the violent ‘enemy’ behind but to no avail. My tiring ‘accomplices’ eventually gave up, tripping over a stone on the ground. Before I knew it, I was suspended in midair, cursing the dog and the stone under my breath. I landed with a big impact, skidding across the solid ground before landing smack in the face on the log. It was inevitable. The approaching ‘doomsday’ had arrived, signaling the horrible end anticipated. The dog stopped dead at its track, seeming glad to triumph over a human. It savoured the prospect of having me as its victim, as it licked its fangs in a pompous and self-satisfied manner.
The dog pounced on me, planting its fangs on my upraised arm. I stared at the demonic figure which was scratching me at the same time, while I screamed and shrieked in pain. I could remember seeing terrified birds flocking out from the park, traumatized by the sudden outburst. Afterwards, I felt the dog loosening its grip. Then, a huge sense of relief flushed my weather-beaten face before darkness plunged into me and I remembered no more.
“Are you all right?” a distinctive voice hooked me up from the sea of unconsciousness, stirring me up with one pair of hands that was slapping my weather-beaten face. When I came to, I found myself lying on a bench in the park, with ‘God incarnate’, who had tamed the violent dog with his divine power. Slowly, the neurons in my brain regained their functions and I realized that ‘He’ was actually my coach. Thousand emotions flooded my brain as he sat beside me bandaging my arm. I did not expect my saviour was a person who once punished me in front of the whole school because I broke a window glass when I was playing soccer. Tears of gratitude flowed down my weary face, as I was quietly contended with the outcome. I was given a ride home by my coach. Inside, I did some self-reflection, as I finally realized that the price of being mischievous was far too risky for me. I learnt a valuable lesson, and had discovered first-hand origin of the phrase ‘let sleeping dogs lie’.
From then on, whenever I saw my soccer boots hanging by the window, I recollected this incident when I failed to subdued my anger. A moment of folly left a scar for life; I would forever remember this valuable lesson.

Dear 6H

Some pics from Carnival@DanceMania

I am indeed proud of you guys to take up this good cause!
Sometimes, you need to take the bull by its horn in order to achieve great things.
What we need are people who take the initiative & ask the "Why not". The world has enough of people who sit by & groan & complain abt the 'half empty'.

Hsiao Tien, seriously...you need to be LESS serious...haha
